We often hear that mental health is important and you need to take care of your mental health, but have you stopped to think why that is? In order to understand why it is important, we need to start by knowing exactly what it is. Mental health is defined as psychological, cognitive, social, and emotional well-being and functioning. Mental well-being and health may seem like a buzzword, but it plays a significant role in our daily lives.

Cognition & Brain Functioning
Having poor mental health can have a drastic impact on our cognitive functioning. This includes processes such as reasoning, thinking, perception, problem solving, memory, and much more. Those with poor mental health may find it challenging to concentrate, adapt, learn, and think. Think of it this way, when your physical health is poor it can affect various organs, so when your mental health is poor, it affects daily mental functioning.
Physical Health
Speaking of physical health, you mental state is linked to your physical state. Your body and mind are closely connected to each other. Even though we may view mental health and physical health as separate, it is important to remember that the brain is part of your body. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have found that mental illness can result in a higher risk of having a stroke, heart conditions, and diabetes. In the same breath, having chronic physical health issues can have a negative impact on your mental health, as stated by the CDC.
Relationships & Connection
Mental health actually plays quite a significant role in how we interact and socialise with others. Having a healthy mind can help you build and maintain healthy relationships. Humans are social beings, even if you are an introvert, you still need to have some form of socialisation and connection. Without meaningful connection and communication, we become isolated which can negatively affect your mental well-being.
Coping & Resilience
A healthy mindset enables you to tackle life's various challenges and bounce back with adversity and strength. Having positive mental health can help you maintain a sense of balance. Some may find it difficult to to find the strength and motivation needed to cope with obstacles that they may face. Having good mental health does not mean that you won't go through tough times, it simply means you are better equipped to handle these tough times.

Ultimately, when you put you mental health on the back burner, you compromise your quality of life. The reason it is so important to prioritise your mental well-being is because it is linked to multiple aspects of life. In order to build a stable house you need a solid foundation. In order to lead a balanced and fulfilled life, you need good mental health. Mental health is your foundation.
